A lot comes at once. You will need to call the doctor, contact a funeral director, register the death at the municipality, inform banks and insurers, and later handle the estate and inheritance tax. On average that is more than 40 tasks across the first 24 hours, the first week, the first month and the first year. Our free checklist puts them in order and explains what each task requires.
A wishes document is not a will, but it is an important guide for your family and the funeral director. Family and professionals will follow your wishes when they are clearly written down. For binding decisions about inheritance and guardianship you need a notarised will. A wishes document prevents disagreements and gives your family calm at a hard moment.

A death must be registered within 6 working days at the municipality where the person died. In most cases the funeral director handles the registration. Request several copies of the death certificate right away, because banks, insurers and pension funds each require one.
A verklaring van erfrecht is a notarised document that shows who the heirs are and who may act on their behalf. Banks and other institutions often ask for it when balances are larger or a home is sold. Costs are usually between 300 and 800 euro. Ask your bank first whether it is really needed, which can save money.
The inheritance tax return must reach the Dutch tax authority within 8 months of the date of death. Above the exemption the heirs pay tax. If you cannot meet the deadline, request an extension in time to avoid fines and interest. Our checklist reminds you of this deadline.
Yes. You can assign tasks to family members by email invitation. Everyone sees live who is doing what and what is already done. That prevents double work and keeps the whole family on the same page in a busy period.
